Our view is great, but the whole wall is missing something, and I think that thing is curtains. Now, I won't pretend to know anything about curtains, but I think they could add some color to the room and could be used to help obscure the room when it gets really bright in the afternoon. The problem is that neither one of us really knows much about curtains, so we're not really sure where to start. The window is pretty wide (over 9 feet), so I'm assuming we'd want a kind of curtain that we could drag across to cover or uncover the entire window, kind of like what they have in hotels. But, I don't know what our options are and don't know where to start looking. Do you get something like this at a department store or at a home improvement store or at some kind of specialty store? And then what are our options? Do we just pick a color or are there a lot of different types? Times like this are when I'd wish someone would do everything for me.
We moved to Seattle in February 2008 and shared blog posts and photos during our first few years in Seattle.

I bought new curtains for my windows in my apartment here. the windows here are also long length-wise and short height-wise. it was really difficult to find curtains that fit and could be mounted using the extant infrastructure. best of luck to you.
I should be there to help! :)
If you come and help with the curtains, we'll let you stay on the couch for FREE.
Since I won't be able to get up there soon, this is my advice.
Pick a color that you like and one that matches what you have in the room.
Then you can go to Target, Ikea or Bed Bath and Beyond to find curtains. I would buy some that are thick because those are the ones that will keep the light out. Also make sure that they have are the length and wide that you need. Sometimes you can use not so wide curtains, buy four and use them as pannels.
It's nice if they go all the way to the floor if the window is designed that way, but it is also okay to keep the length similar to the length of the window so if your window is not that big then your curtains should not overpower the window.
I hope this helps.... I am kind of embarrased by this post because I really don't want to sound like Emily Post. In the end, it's your apartment, and you can do what you want!
Honestly, I'd rather have someone do all this decorating for us, so thanks a ton for the advice. The problem is that our windows are wide and not that tall (57" tall), so I was wanting to get kind of short curtains that fit the window, but it seems the standard height everywhere is 84", which seems way too long. I don't know where to find curtains that will be the right height. Do we have to get custom made curtains?

Look at the main picture they have now, you could have find something like that. They are not curtains per se but they could do the trick and it looks very modern. The good thing about these is that you can roll them as much as you need so they would fit the size.
